Since 2018, The Sanctuary Wellness Medical Marijuana Doctors of Harrisburg, PA have assisted thousands of people with getting medical marijuana cards and accessing the treatment they need.

According to a recent survey of our patients, medical cannabis is being used to treat anxiety, pain, stress, insomnia, and for general relaxation and enjoyment, among other reasons, all without the side effects associated with pharmaceuticals.

The Sanctuary Wellness Institute connects Pennsylvania residents with Pennsylvania Department of Health–approved physicians who can evaluate patients for eligibility for the Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Card Program.

All medical marijuana certifications are completed by independent, PA-licensed physicians. If approved, the physician submits your certification directly to the Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH).

We do not print or mail cards. Your card, payment to the state, and portal login are between you and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Understanding the Potential Side Effects of Medical Marijuana

Chronic or heavy use of medical marijuana may lead to long-term health effects. These can differ based on the method of consumption, frequency of use, and the THC-to-CBD ratio. Long-term side effects may include:

  • Respiratory issues: Smoking cannabis regularly may irritate the lungs and lead to chronic bronchitis or coughing. Alternatives such as vaporizers, edibles, or tinctures are generally less harmful to respiratory health.
  • Tolerance and dependence: Over time, frequent users may develop tolerance, requiring higher doses for the same therapeutic effect. In some cases, mild withdrawal symptoms—such as irritability, sleep problems, or cravings—can occur upon discontinuation.
  • Cognitive impact: Prolonged use, particularly starting at a young age, may affect learning, memory, and concentration.
  • Mental health concerns: Individuals predisposed to anxiety, depression, or psychotic disorders may experience worsened symptoms with high-THC cannabis use.
  • Motivational changes: Some users report reduced motivation, energy, or productivity—often referred to as “amotivational syndrome.”

Medical marijuana can be a valuable part of a personalized treatment plan when used responsibly and under medical guidance. Understanding both the benefits and potential side effects allows patients to make safe, evidence-based decisions about their care.
