Virginia Medical Marijuana Qualifying Conditions

The state of Virginia does not maintain a fixed list of qualifying medical conditions for medical cannabis. Under state law, a Virginia-licensed practitioner may issue a written certification to a patient if, in the practitioner’s professional judgment, the patient has a condition for which medical cannabis may provide therapeutic benefit.

Eligibility is determined case by case during a medical evaluation, based on the patient’s health history and the practitioner’s clinical assessment, in accordance with regulations set by the Virginia Cannabis Control Authority (CCA).

Under Virginia regulations, patients may purchase no more than a 90-day supply of medical cannabis, as determined by the certifying practitioner. For botanical (flower) cannabis, purchases are limited to up to 4 ounces within a 30-day period, subject to practitioner authorization and dispensary policies.

How to Become a Medical Marijuana Caregiver in VA

  2. Registration is completed directly with the Virginia Cannabis Control Authority, not through a medical provider.

Understanding the Potential Side Effects of Medical Marijuana

Chronic or heavy use of medical marijuana may lead to long-term health effects. These can differ based on the method of consumption, frequency of use, and the THC-to-CBD ratio. Long-term side effects may include:

  • Respiratory issues: Smoking cannabis regularly may irritate the lungs and lead to chronic bronchitis or coughing. Alternatives such as vaporizers, edibles, or tinctures are generally less harmful to respiratory health.
  • Tolerance and dependence: Over time, frequent users may develop tolerance, requiring higher doses for the same therapeutic effect. In some cases, mild withdrawal symptoms—such as irritability, sleep problems, or cravings—can occur upon discontinuation.
  • Cognitive impact: Prolonged use, particularly starting at a young age, may affect learning, memory, and concentration.
  • Mental health concerns: Individuals predisposed to anxiety, depression, or psychotic disorders may experience worsened symptoms with high-THC cannabis use.
  • Motivational changes: Some users report reduced motivation, energy, or productivity—often referred to as “amotivational syndrome.”

Medical marijuana can be a valuable part of a personalized treatment plan when used responsibly and under medical guidance. Understanding both the benefits and potential side effects allows patients to make safe, evidence-based decisions about their care.
