How to Become a Medical Marijuana Caregiver in PA

Medical marijuana caregivers in Pennsylvania may obtain a caregiver medical marijuana card and purchase medical marijuana from a Pennsylvania dispensary on behalf of patients with whom they are linked in the state's Medical Marijuana Program.

All minors are required to have a caregiver. Adult patients who are homebound or benefit from assistance may also have a caregiver register on their behalf, and any registered adult patient may choose to designate a caregiver.

Caregivers may provide care for an unlimited number of patients. In general, a caregiver must be at least 21 years old, be a Pennsylvania resident, register with the Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Program, and complete a criminal history background check. To become a caregiver in Pennsylvania:

  1. Register With the Medical Marijuana Program: Create a caregiver profile through the Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Program and provide the required information for the patient you will assist.
  2. Complete a Criminal History Background Check: Follow the Department of Health's instructions to complete the required background check through the Commonwealth's authorized vendor. New caregivers may be required to complete fingerprinting as part of this process.
  3. Wait for Background Check Approval: The Department of Health reviews the background check before approving a caregiver. Approval can take three to four weeks after the fingerprint appointment.
  4. Pay for Your Caregiver Medical Marijuana ID Card: If approved, pay the applicable ID card fee. The standard fee is $50, although qualifying participants in certain government programs may receive a no-cost medical marijuana ID card.
  5. Receive Your Caregiver ID Card: Once your caregiver status is approved and the applicable payment requirements are completed, you will receive a caregiver medical marijuana ID card. You may then purchase medical marijuana at a Pennsylvania dispensary on behalf of patients with whom you are linked in the Medical Marijuana Program.
