How to Get a Medical Marijuana Card in Tampa, FL

What to Expect—Appointment & Approval Process

Step 1 is to book an appointment with your SWI medical marijuana doctor

Schedule Your Evaluation With a Medical Marijuana Doctor

Book an appointment with a Florida-licensed qualified physician. Your medical history will be reviewed, and the doctor will explain Florida’s medical marijuana requirements. (Note: Initial certifications require an in-person physical examination; subsequent certification renewals may be conducted through telehealth.)

Step 2 is to meet with your SWI medical marijuana doctor

Meet with a Florida Medical Marijuana Doctor

During your evaluation, the physician will determine whether you meet Florida’s requirements for a physician certification. If you qualify, the physician will enter your certification and order into the Medical Marijuana Use Registry (MMUR).

Step three: Visit dispensary near you to obtain medical marijuana product

Get Approved and Receive Your Florida Medical Marijuana Card

After your physician enters your certification and order into the MMUR, submit your identification card application and pay the $75 state fee. As of July 27, 2026, you must have a current or scheduled certification with an open order to complete your application. Once approved, you can fill your physician’s order at a licensed Medical Marijuana Treatment Center (MMTC).

Understanding the Potential Side Effects of Medical Marijuana

Medical marijuana can be a helpful part of a treatment plan for qualifying medical conditions in Florida, but patients should be aware of potential side effects. Effects can vary depending on the method of use, frequency, and THC-to-CBD ratio.

  • Respiratory issues: Smoking cannabis can harm lung tissue and may cause coughing or bronchitis. Other methods of use have their own potential health risks.
  • Tolerance and dependence: Frequent use may lead to tolerance, meaning higher doses may be needed for the same effect. Some patients may experience withdrawal symptoms, such as irritability or sleep disturbances, if use is reduced or stopped.
  • Cognitive impact: Long-term use, especially beginning at a young age, may affect memory, learning, and concentration.
  • Mental health considerations: Individuals with a history of anxiety, depression, or psychotic disorders should use caution, particularly with high-THC products.
  • Motivation or energy changes: Some users report changes in energy or motivation.

Understanding both benefits and potential effects helps patients make informed decisions. Medical marijuana should only be used under the guidance of a Florida-licensed qualified physician.
