How to Get a Medical Marijuana Card in Port Charlotte, FL

step 1

Call the Sanctuary to Schedule a Visit with a Certified Doctor

You must first receive certification from a Florida-approved physician in order to be eligible for a Florida cannabis card. Our helpful staff will book your appointment and guide you through the steps required to obtain a Florida medical marijuana card.

step 2

Meet with a Florida Cannabis Doctor

You'll need a recommendation from a registered medical marijuana physician since people in Florida are only eligible to use cannabis for certain conditions. During your appointment, your Florida cannabis doctor will evaluate your qualifying condition(s) and complete an examination to make sure you meet the state's requirements for medical cannabis use. If your doctor decides you're eligible to use medical marijuana, they'll add your information to the Medical Marijuana Use Registry (MMUR), which is overseen by the Florida Office of Medical Marijuana Use (OMMU).

step 3

Submit Your Registration Through the State’s Website

Once your medical marijuana provider has entered your information into the MMUR, you can apply online or by mail for medicinal marijuana in Florida. Included must be payment, evidence of residency, and a passport-style photo. Your application will then be reviewed by the OMMU.

How to Renew Your Florida Medical Marijuana Card

Florida medical marijuana cards expire one year after they are issued. Patients can apply for card renewals up to 45 days before they expire. If this is not done, the state will mark the card as delinquent and you will no longer be able to use it. You can renew your card online or by mail.

Florida patients must also see a medical marijuana doctor every seven months or 210 days for a recertification appointment according to state law. These consultations can take place in person or online.

To renew your Florida medical marijuana card, follow these steps:

  1. Schedule a recertification appointment with one of the Sanctuary’s medical marijuana doctors
  2. Submit a renewal application through the MMUR online portal or by mail
  3. Pay the state’s $75 renewal fee

The OMMU usually reviews online applications within 10 business days of receiving them.

Who Is Eligible for a Medical Marijuana Card in Florida?

Three elements determine medical marijuana eligibility in the state of Florida:

  • Patients must be at least 18 years old (caregivers must be at least 21 years old and can apply on behalf of patients under 18).
  • You must be diagnosed with a qualifying condition by a state-certified medical marijuana doctor.
  • You must be a Florida resident, either permanently or temporarily.

How Do I Prove Florida Residency?

Applicants for Florida MMJ cards must be residents of Florida, either full-time or part-time. Full-time residents must have a valid Florida driver's license or state identification card. Other forms of proof of residency will not be accepted when applying for an MMJ card as a full-time resident.

Full-Time Residents

If a full-time resident applies online, the registration will immediately validate a driver's license or state ID with the DMV. If applying on paper, full-time residents must provide a copy of their Florida driver's license or state ID card.

Temporary/Part Time/Seasonal Residents

A temporary resident is defined by Florida law as someone who:

  • Spends at least 31 days in Florida each calendar year
  • Returns to their native state at least once per year
  • Is a registered voter in the United States or pays income taxes in another state

Temporary residents must provide copies of two of the following documents:

  • A mortgage, a deed, a monthly mortgage statement, a mortgage payment booklet, or a lease agreement
  • One proof of residence address from a person with whom the part-time resident lives, as well as a declaration stating that the part-time resident resides there
  • A hook-up/work order for water, cable, or electricity that is less than 60 days old
  • A bill for water, cable, or utilities that is less than 60 days old
  • Mail received from a financial institution within the last 60 days
  • Mail that is less than 60 days old from a federal, state, county, or city government agency
