Receive Your Medical Marijuana Recommendation

After the physician determines that medical marijuana may be appropriate, he will issue a recommendation. The physician sends the recommendation directly to an LDH-permitted medical marijuana retailer.

Step three: Access medical marijuana products at a licensed Louisiana medical marijuana pharmacy

Obtain Medical Marijuana from a Louisiana Retailer

Once the retailer receives your recommendation, you may obtain medical marijuana in accordance with Louisiana law and your clinician's recommendation. The recommendation must include an expiration date that does not exceed 12 months from the date it is issued. A new recommendation is required to continue purchasing medical marijuana after the existing recommendation expires.

Where Can I Buy Medical Marijuana in Louisiana?

Medical marijuana in Louisiana may be purchased from LDH-permitted medical marijuana retailers. These retailers are regulated by the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) and provide medical marijuana to patients pursuant to a valid recommendation from an authorized clinician.

Under Louisiana law, a medical marijuana retailer may not sell more than 2.5 ounces (71 grams) of raw or crude marijuana every 14 days to an individual patient.

How to Become a Medical Marijuana Caregiver in LA

Louisiana allows a patient's caregiver to receive medical marijuana on the patient's behalf. Under Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) rules, medical marijuana may be provided to a patient or the patient's caregiver at an LDH-permitted medical marijuana retailer or delivered to the patient’s or caregiver’s home address.

Before medical marijuana can be provided, an authorized clinician must send the patient's valid recommendation directly to the medical marijuana retailer.

Patients who need caregiver assistance should contact their LDH-permitted medical marijuana retailer for its current caregiver identification and pickup requirements.

Medical marijuana can cause side effects, and the risks may vary depending on factors such as THC concentration, frequency of use, method of consumption, age, and individual health conditions. Frequent or long-term cannabis use may be associated with:

  • Respiratory effects: Smoking cannabis can damage lung tissue and may increase the risk of cough, bronchitis, and mucus production.
  • Cannabis use disorder: Some people who use cannabis may develop cannabis use disorder, including difficulty controlling or stopping their use.
