How to Renew Your Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Card

In Pennsylvania, your medical marijuana card certification must be renewed every 12 months. Thankfully, recertification is easy. All you need to do is meet with a doctor again and pay a $50 renewal fee with the Department of Health.

The process for renewing your medical marijuana card in PA is as follows:

  • 60 days before your certificate expires, you will receive an email reminder about renewal. At this point, you may make an online appointment with any of the licensed medical marijuana doctors at the Sanctuary.
  • Your recertification visit with your doctor will be similar to your original MMJ consultation. Your doctor will inquire about your symptoms, as well as how you feel during and after using medicinal marijuana. Your certification will be sent to the state registry by the doctor.
  • 30 days before the payment deadline for your renewal, the Department of Health will also send you an email reminder. This is a good time to confirm that your payment method and mailing address are up to date.
  • Once your doctor's certificate is current and your payment is accepted, the state will automatically mail you a replacement MMJ card.

How to Become a Medical Marijuana Caregiver in PA

In Pennsylvania, persons who register with the state's medical marijuana program as caregivers can buy medicinal marijuana on behalf of children, adults who are housebound, and those who need help because of a condition. Registered caregivers must be above 21 and possess a current driver's license or other Pennsylvania state-issued identification card.

  1. To become a caregiver, you first have to register with the Department of Health. To create your account, you must include your name and address, the name of the patient you will be helping, their program ID number, and their name.
  2. Undergo a criminal background check via the state's provider. People who have been found guilty of a crime involving the sale or possession of narcotics or other prohibited substances during the last five years are unable to work as carers. After your appointment for fingerprinting, it can take up to six weeks for the state to process your background check.
  3. Once you pass the background check, the state will email you to let you know. The $50 registration fee can then be paid. Medical marijuana cards for caregivers have yearly expiration dates.
  4. Make an online appointment with one of the Sanctuary’s licensed medical professionals.

As a caregiver, you are only permitted to visit dispensaries and buy marijuana if your account is linked to a valid patient's. If you look after an adult, they can link you to their online account as their caregiver and grant you permission to buy cannabis goods on their behalf. In order to become patients, minors or persons with impairments must register with you as their caregiver.

Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Card Conditions

Today, if you are struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder or other types of qualifying conditions, you can visit one of Pennsylvania's dispensaries to obtain up to a 90-day supply of marijuana.
