What Happens Inside A Florida Dispensary?

The Office of Medical Marijuana Use (OMMU) licenses several dispensaries across the state of Florida. The OMMU refers to these locations as medical marijuana treatment centers (MMTCs), and you can access the agency’s search tool to find a location in your area.

MMTCs are subject to strict operating regulations. When you visit an MMTC for the first time, you will need to complete an intake procedure so that the dispensary staff can verify you are a patient and understand the terms of your prescription. You can use your medical marijuana card at any MMTC in Florida.

You’ll typically enter a separate waiting area and enter the retail space once a staff member invites you in. There, the staff will walk you through the different types of cannabis products you can purchase based on your prescription information.

What Should You Bring to A Florida MMTC?

When you visit a Florida MMTC, you should always bring your Medical Marijuana Use registry ID, a state-issued identification card, and either cash or a debit card. These items are required to purchase cannabis at all dispensary locations.

While some dispensaries may accept debit cards, it is a smart idea to bring cash with you on your first visit. Federal regulations sometimes prohibit banks from processing marijuana-related transactions. Many dispensaries have ATMs on site for your convenience.

Types of Cannabis Products Available in Florida?

MMTCs in Florida cannot dispense more than a 35-day supply of smokable cannabis, and a 70-day supply of all forms of cannabis. At the dispensary, you can purchase dried flower, oils, tinctures, concentrates, and topical products like lotions and balms.

You can purchase edibles, which are cannabis products you can eat, like cookies or gummies. However, the dispensary must make these products with cannabis oil only -- not higher concentration products. MMTCs must also have at least one low tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) cannabis option available; THC is the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.

Until 2019, the state prohibited dispensaries from selling smokable marijuana. While you can now purchase these products, you may need to seek two certifications from licensed physicians to receive dried cannabis. Speak to your doctor to see which products are right for you.
