MMJ Card Renewal Missouri

Renewing your medical marijuana card in Missouri is a simple process that ensures you can continue purchasing medical-grade cannabis to manage the symptoms of your qualifying medical condition. As of October 2022, the only way to legally obtain cannabis in Missouri is with a valid medical marijuana card.

Your yearly renewal requires you to schedule a recertification appointment with a medical marijuana doctor to obtain an updated physician certification. This consultation with a licensed physician allows you to discuss changes to your symptoms, ask questions regarding your potential responses to medical marijuana, and review your need for a revised dosage.

Read on to learn about the renewal process and its documentation requirements to ensure you can continue purchasing medical marijuana products without interruption.

When Do You Need to Renew Your Missouri MMJ Card?

Missouri medical marijuana cards expire one year after their issue date. The expiration date is printed on the front of your card. You can submit your renewal application 60 days before your card's expiration date. The state then has up to 30 days to process renewals.

Under Missouri’s current renewal process, you cannot receive your new medical cannabis card before your current card expires if you apply for renewal less than 30 days before its expiration. The state sends email reminders to renew 60, 45, 30, and 15 days before your expiration date.

How to Renew Your Missouri Medical Marijuana Card?

You must submit your renewal application online using your registry portal account. A complete and accurate application is the best way to receive quick approval.

Once you log in to your account, select the “Patient Renewal” option under the “Create New Application” tab. Your demographic and physician information carries over from the prior application.

Review your demographic information for accuracy and verify that your cultivation status matches. You can then pair your electronic physician certification with your application.

Your doctor will submit your physician certification form directly to the state. It can take 48 hours after your appointment for the form to appear in your account. Your updated physician certification must be dated less than 30 days before the date you submit your renewal application.

Submit Documents

Renewal applications submitted to the Missouri Medical Marijuana Program require the same supplemental documents as new patient applications. As part of the renewal application process, Missouri patients must upload:

  • A clear and color digital photograph of your face taken within the last three months, pose as you would for a driver's license photo in front of a plain white or off-white background
  • Proof of Missouri residency, acceptable forms include a Missouri driver’s license or non-driver state ID, a utility bill with your residential address, or a Missouri DMV registration
  • A copy of a government-issued photo ID, acceptable forms include a valid driver's license, non-driver state ID, or passport

Submit Application Fee

As a qualified patient, you must pay your application fee through the Missouri Medical Marijuana Portal you use to submit your renewal application. Missouri will not accept renewal applications or begin processing them without payment.

Make sure you have all the necessary documents and can pay the renewal fee when obtaining your updated physician certification because it is only valid for 30 days.

How Much Does a Medical Marijuana Card Renewal Cost in Missouri?

Renewal cards cost $27.76 for patients and caregivers. Patient cultivator cards cost $110.99. The fee must be paid through the online portal and is due at the time of application submission. Application fees are non-refundable. If you receive a denial and wish to re-apply, you must pay the fee again for your re-application.

Benefits of Having a Missouri MMJ Card

While some Missouri municipalities have decriminalized marijuana possession and recreational sales are up for a vote, the only way to legally obtain and possess cannabis is with a medical marijuana card.

Your Missouri medical marijuana card allows you to purchase four ounces of dried marijuana or its equivalent per 30-day period. If your medical condition requires a larger dose, you can apply for a higher purchase limit with recommendations from two physicians.

You will be able to purchase high-quality marijuana and medical-grade products derived from cannabis at any licensed dispensary. All products sold in Missouri come from plants cultivated under rigorous safety and quality standards.

Managing your symptoms as a medical marijuana cardholder also ensures you have received proper consultation from a skilled medical marijuana doctor. You should not attempt to self-manage symptoms with cannabis.

Only doctors can determine if marijuana can manage the symptoms of your medical condition, rule out possible contraindications, and advise you about potential interactions with the other medications you take.

If recreational marijuana legalization passes, it may take years for sales to begin. In addition, your status as a cardholder will likely entitle you to higher purchase limits.
