The Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Program was established to give PA residents with serious medical conditions access to medical cannabis treatment. The program was signed into law by Governor Tom Wolf on April 17, 2016 with the passage of Act 16, otherwise known as the Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Act. The first Pennsylvania dispensaries opened their doors in early 2018.
To participate in PA's medical marijuana program, patients must first be diagnosed with one of the qualifying medical conditions outlined by the state. Upon receiving this diagnosis, patients must then register with the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s Patient and Caregiver Registry. Finally, a certified physician must provide an official recommendation for medical marijuana use.
Once a patient gets approved by the state, they receive a medical marijuana ID card that enables them to purchase medical cannabis from state-approved dispensaries. These dispensaries sell safe, high-quality cannabis products in the form of oils, pills, tinctures, topical ointments, dried flower, and more.
Every Pennsylvania MMJ card must be renewed annually to remain valid. Sixty days before your card’s expiration, you should receive an email from the state letting you know it’s time to renew it.
