How to Get a Medical Marijuana Card in Pennsylvania

step 1

Register for the medical marijuana program at medicalmarijuana.pa.gov

To begin applying for a Pennsylvania card, you will need to register online on the PA DOH website. The registration form will ask for your contact information as well as proof of Pennsylvania residency. You can submit a driver's license or ID card as proof of residency, but make sure this document has your most current address. The system will give you a patient ID number; save it and bring this number to your appointment.

step 2

Meet with a Certified Doctor from the Sanctuary

Next, you will need to receive certification for a medical marijuana card from a doctor who has been certified with the PA Department of Health. For your convenience, you can schedule a telehealth appointment with one of The Sanctuary’s medical marijuana doctors. Your meeting will be brief, in which you will spend 10 to 15 minutes discussing your health concerns and any questions you might have regarding the use of medical marijuana. If your doctor decides that you qualify, they will give your certification that same day.

step 3

Complete registration an PA DOH website

After your doctor verifies your certification with the state, you can complete your registration on the PA DOH website. You will need to log into the same account you used to register and submit a $50 fee. Once the PA DOH receives your registration fee, it will mail your card to the address listed on your driver's license or ID card.

How to Renew Your Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Card

It's easy to renew your medical marijuana card in Pennsylvania. All you need to do is obtain an updated certificate and pay the renewal charge. You can remain a patient for as long as you like after enrolling in the state's registry.

To acquire cannabis from a dispensary in Pennsylvania, your certification must be updated every 12 months. The state mandates a doctor's reassessment to confirm marijuana is still safe and effective for each patient.

You will receive an email 60 days before your certificate expires reminding you to renew it. You can then schedule an appointment with one of the Sanctuary's authorized medical marijuana doctors online. This appointment will be similar to your first medical cannabis consultation.

In addition, 30 days before your renewal payment is due, the Department of Health will send you an email reminder. You may then log in to your account and make sure you have a valid payment method on file. If you pay your $50 renewal charge within 30 days of receiving this notice, your card will not expire.

Your doctor will inquire about your symptoms as well as your reaction to medical marijuana treatment. Based on your own experiences, you can ask questions concerning topics like dosing and side effects. Your certification will be sent to the state's registry by the doctor. It will connect to your account immediately.

Make sure to confirm your address on file online is correct. If your doctor's certificate is current and your payment is accepted, the state will mail you a replacement MMJ card.

How to Become a Medical Marijuana Caregiver in PA

Medical marijuana caregivers in Pennsylvania are those who register with the state's medical marijuana program in order to acquire medicinal marijuana on behalf of kids, homebound adults, and people with disabilities. Registered caregivers must be at least 21 years old and have a valid Pennsylvania driver's license or state-issued ID.

  1. As a caregiver, you must register with the Department of Health. To set up your account, you will need to submit the name of the patient you will be supporting and their program ID number, as well as your name and address.
  2. Submit to a criminal background check using the vendor provided by the state. Individuals who have been convicted of a criminal charge for selling or possessing narcotics or controlled substances within the last five years are not eligible to become caretakers. After your fingerprinting appointment, background checks take up to six weeks to process.

  1. Once you pass the background check, the state will contact you through email. After that, you can pay the $50 registration fee. Medical marijuana cards for caregivers have an annual expiration date.
  2. Make a telehealth appointment with one of our physicians.

As a caregiver, you can only access dispensaries and buy marijuana if your account is linked to a registered patient's. If you serve as an adult's caregiver, they can allow you to purchase cannabis goods on their behalf by designating you as their caregiver on their online account. To become patients, minors or individuals with disabilities must register with a caregiver.

Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Card Conditions

Medical marijuana has been legal in Pennsylvania since the passage of the Medical Marijuana Act in 2016. Under this law, any patient with a qualifying condition, such as spasticity or neuropathies, can apply for the medical marijuana program. Patients cannot grow their own cannabis and recreational marijuana remains illegal in Pennsylvania.

Caregivers who are 21 years or older can also apply for the Pennsylvania medical marijuana program. These caregivers must pass a background check and submit additional documents to be approved for the program, however.
