Medical marijuana has been legal in Maryland since 2014, with the passage of House Bill 881. Since the state began selling cannabis in late 2017, many residents with qualifying conditions have applied for a medical marijuana card to legally purchase these products.

Step 1: Register with the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commision

Unlike many other states, Maryland requires you to register with the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission (MMCC) prior to visiting a physician for an evaluation. You will need to create an account on the MMCC registration portal, and provide the following pieces of information:

  • Proof of identity, such as a driver’s license or a passport
  • Two pieces of documentation that prove your Maryland residency, such as a utility bill, bank statement, or an MVA registration card
  • An clear, electronic copy of a recent photograph

For a complete list of the documents you must provide and guidelines for your photograph and proof of residency, visit the MMCC website. After you create your account and submit an application, you will need to verify your email address to validate your account.

The MMCC will then review your application and inform you via email if they approve your application. This approval email will contain important information for your registration, so make sure to save it for your records.

Step 2: Obtain A Written Certification from an MMCC-Approved Physician

After completing your initial registration and receiving approval, you can now visit a licensed physician who can provide a written certification for medical cannabis use. Not every Maryland doctor qualifies -- you will need to visit a provider registered with the MMCC.

The Sanctuary Wellness Institute can connect you with a physician with the appropriate credentials who can evaluate your qualifying condition. If your doctor approves you for cannabis use, you will receive a valid written certification.

Step 3: Complete Your MMCC Registration

Your doctor will ask for your Patient ID number provided in your MMCC approval email, and issue the certification through the MMCC’s online portal. With your certification on file, you can now complete your MMCC registration.

Simply log into your MMCC account, pay a $50 fee, and print your temporary MMCC ID card. Now, you can begin

Step 4: Purchase Medical Marijuana at A Licensed Dispensary

With your temporary MMCC ID in hand, you can purchase cannabis at any licensed dispensary operating within Maryland. When you visit a dispensary, the staff will ask you to present your MMCC ID card to verify your information in the state’s database.

You can purchase up to 30 days’ worth of medical marijuana at a time. In addition, you’ll need to begin purchasing cannabis within 120 days of receiving your certification, or it will become null and void.
