How to Get a Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Card

step 1

Schedule an Evaluation Online With an Approved Physician

For your convenience, you can schedule a telehealth appointment with one of The Sanctuary’s medical marijuana doctors. Our team is here to make the process of receiving a Pennsylvania medical marijuana card easy for you.

step 2

Meet with a Medical Marijuana Doctor

Receive certification from one of our medical marijuana doctors. Your meeting will be brief, in which you will spend 10 to 15 minutes discussing your health concerns and any questions you might have regarding the use of medical marijuana. If your doctor decides that you qualify, they will give your certification that same day.

step 3

Complete Registration and Receive Your Card

Once your physician has certified you, you will receive an email confirmation prompting you to log into your account with the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Note that you will need your PA driver’s license or state ID as well as your current address to complete registration. After paying a $50 fee, you will receive your card in the mail within 7-14 days.

How to Renew Your Medical Marijuana Card in PA

It's easy to renew your medical marijuana card in Pennsylvania. All you need to do is receive an updated certificate and pay a renewal fee. You can continue to be a patient for as long as you like after being added to the state's registry.

To buy marijuana at a dispensary in Pennsylvania, your certification must be renewed every 12 months. This time period ensures patient safety by requiring a reevaluation to make sure medical marijuana is still appropriate and safe in each specific circumstance.

The process for renewing your medical marijuana card in PA is as follows:

  • You will receive an email reminder 60 days before your certificate expires. You may then make an online appointment with any of the licensed medical marijuana doctors at the Sanctuary.
  • In your recertification visit, your doctor will inquire about your signs and symptoms after using medical marijuana. Your doctor will then send your recertification to the registry.
  • 30 days prior to the payment deadline for your renewal, the Department of Health will also send you an email reminder to pay the $50 renewal fee. Make sure your mailing address and payment method listed in your online account are correct.
  • Once your doctor's certificate is received and your payment is accepted, the state will automatically mail you a new card.

How to Become a Medical Marijuana Caregiver in PA

In Pennsylvania, those who register with the state's medical marijuana program can buy medical marijuana on behalf of children, adults who are housebound, and people who need assistance because of a disability. Registered caregivers must be over 21 and possess a current driver's license or other Pennsylvania state-issued identification card.

  1. As a caregiver, you must register with the Department of Health. To create your account, you must supply your name and address, the name of the patient you will be helping, their program ID number, and their name.
  2. Submit to a criminal background check via the state's vendor. People who have been found guilty of a crime involving the sale or possession of drugs or other controlled substances within the previous five years are ineligible to work as caregivers. After your appointment for fingerprinting, it can take up to six weeks to process your background check.
  3. Once you pass the background check, the state will email you to let you know. The $50 registration fee can then be paid. Medical marijuana cards for caregivers have yearly expiration dates.
  4. Make an online appointment with one of the Sanctuary's licensed physicians.

As a caregiver, you are only permitted to visit dispensaries and buy marijuana if your account is linked to a valid patient. If you look after an adult, they can link you to their online account as their caregiver and give you permission to buy cannabis products on their behalf. In order to become patients, minors or adults with disabilities must register with you as their caregiver.

Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Card Conditions

The Medical Marijuana Act (Act) was approved by the Pennsylvania General Assembly on April 17, 2016. This made the use, possession, and sale of medical marijuana legal. You must be a resident of Pennsylvania in order to apply for a card and buy medical marijuana from state dispensaries. To become certified, a PDH-approved doctor must confirm you have a qualifying condition.

In order to be eligible to receive an official Pennsylvania medical marijuana card, you must be diagnosed with one of the following qualifying conditions:

Frequently Asked Questions

Cardholders can shop for safe and regulated marijuana products at any licensed Pennsylvania dispensary. The DOH has a complete list of locations.

Cardholders and registered caregivers are the only individuals permitted in dispensaries. These facilities strive to create a safe and supportive environment to help maximize your experience with medical marijuana.

Cards expire yearly. You will receive an email notice 60 days before your expiration date. Renewal requires logging in to your registry account, updating or confirming your demographic information, and attending a telehealth renewal appointment.

You can then pay the renewal fee online. Once the DOH receives your certification from the doctor, they mail your card. You can consult a different doctor for your renewal application than the one who issued your initial recommendation for marijuana.

Your application for a PA MMJ card can be denied if you haven’t been diagnosed with one of the state’s qualifying conditions, your application is incomplete or contains inaccurate information, you’re too young to obtain a medical marijuana card without the consent of a parent or legal guardian, or you’ve been charged with a violent, drug-related crime.

Any Pennsylvania resident with a qualifying medical condition can obtain a medical marijuana card with a certification from an authorized doctor. Minors need a parent or guardian to enroll in the registry as a caregiver to purchase and possess cannabis on their behalf.

Qualifying conditions include anxiety disorders, brain-spinal cord injury, neuropathies, post-traumatic stress disorder, inflammatory bowel disease, and seizures.

There is no background check requirement for patients. Caregiver applicants are subject to a criminal background check, though. Felonies preclude individuals from becoming caregivers.

While it’s possible to get certified for medical marijuana the same day you schedule an appointment with a medical marijuana doctor, it will take seven to ten days for the state to mail you your MMJ card.

While there are no dispensaries currently open in Chester Springs, others such as Zenleaf in Malvern, Beyond Hello in West Chester, and Organic Remedies in Paoli are all within a short drive.
