How to Get a Medical Marijuana Card in Pennsylvania

step 1

Register for the medical marijuana program at medicalmarijuana.pa.gov

The first step toward obtaining a Pennsylvania medical marijuana card is to register online. You will need to register before you attend your evaluation because your physician will need your patient ID number to submit your certification. When you register, you will need to submit your driver's license or ID card as proof of Pennsylvania residency. Make sure that the address on your driver's license or ID card is current, and when the system provides your patient ID number, save it for your records.

step 2

Meet with a Certified Doctor from the Sanctuary

Next, you will need to receive certification for a medical marijuana card from a doctor who has been certified with the PA Department of Health. For your convenience, you can schedule a telehealth appointment with one of The Sanctuary’s medical marijuana doctors. Your meeting will be brief, in which you will spend 10 to 15 minutes discussing your health concerns and any questions you might have regarding the use of medical marijuana. If your doctor decides that you qualify, they will give your certification that same day.

step 3

Complete Registration on PA Department of Health Website

Following your doctor's certification, the Pennsylvania Department of Health will send you an email with further instructions. You must log in to the account you used to register and pay a $50 fee to the DOH. The DOH will mail your medical cannabis card to the address on your driver's license or ID card after you pay the fee. After completing the registration process, you should obtain your cannabis card within 14 days.

How to Renew Your Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Card

girl blue

It is simple to renew your medical marijuana card in Pennsylvania. All you have to do is obtain an updated certificate and pay the renewal fee. You can remain a patient for as long as you want after enrolling in the state's registry.

To purchase cannabis from a dispensary in Pennsylvania, your certification must be renewed every 12 months. The mandatory doctor's reassessment that the state requires ensures medical marijuana is still safe and effective in each individual case.

  • You will receive an email 60 days before your certificate expires reminding you to renew it. You can then schedule an appointment with one of the Sanctuary's registered medical marijuana doctors online. This visit will be similar to your first MMJ consultation.
  • In addition, 30 days before your renewal payment is due, the Department of Health will send you an email reminder. You can then log in to your account and make sure you have a valid payment method on file. If you pay your $50 renewal fee within 30 days of receiving this notice, your card will not expire.
  • Your doctor will inquire about your symptoms as well as your reaction to your medical marijuana treatment. Based on your own experiences, you can ask questions about dosing, side effects, and more. Your new certification will be sent to the registry by the doctor. It will connect to your account automatically.
  • Make sure your address on file with the state is correct. As long as your doctor's certificate is current and your payment is accepted, the state will automatically mail you a new card.

Get Your MMJ Card in Altoona, PA with The Sanctuary

Like many states, Pennsylvania has strict rules for its medical marijuana program—especially when it comes to the physician evaluation. Only doctors certified by the Pennsylvania Department of Health can approve patients for the medical marijuana program. Finding the right doctor can be a challenge—but the Sanctuary is here to help.

The Sanctuary's doctors are licensed by the state of Pennsylvania to lawfully certify their patients for medical marijuana. During your appointment, one of our doctors will examine your medical condition and determine whether or not you qualify for the state's program. They will then enter your information into the DOH register, allowing you to finish your card application. These assessments normally only last 10 to 15 minutes.

We are only offering telehealth appointments at this time. Contact us at (814) 470-4895 to speak to one of our staff members and schedule your remote evaluation.

Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Card Conditions

Since 2016, medical marijuana use has been permitted in Pennsylvania. Senate Bill 3, often known as the Medical Marijuana Act, was enacted by the Pennsylvania House of Representatives by a vote of 149 to 46, and by the Pennsylvania Senate by a vote of 42 to 7. On April 17, 2016, Governor Tom Wolf signed the bill into law.

The Medical Marijuana Act established guidelines for Pennsylvania's medical marijuana program, including the first list of qualifying ailments, standards for dispensaries and cultivators, and limits on the amount and type of cannabis products patients could purchase. Prior to 2018, only non-smokable cannabis could be sold. Eligible patients can now select from a variety of items to satisfy their medical needs.

You should also be aware that you are prohibited from possessing firearms in Pennsylvania if you are a medical marijuana cardholder. Also note that if you rent your home, your landlord is under no legal obligation to allow medical marijuana use on their property.

Doctors are not required to issue medical marijuana certificates. They must opt into the program. As a result, your primary care provider or the doctor who treats your qualifying medical condition won’t necessarily be participants in the state’s medical marijuana program.

Doctors who opt in are experienced professionals who believe in the beneficial effects of cannabis and understand the risks and side effects. They will offer valuable guidance to help you make decisions. The DOH has a complete list of qualified providers. You can consult one in person or via telehealth services.
