How to Get A Medical Marijuana Card in Nevada Step by Step

Nevada is one of 37 states with an active medical marijuana program. Residents with qualifying health conditions can obtain cards that entitle them to expanded rights and broader access to cannabis. For those with debilitating symptoms, medical marijuana can be life-changing.

While not curative, cannabis can alleviate many symptoms, including pain, nausea, anxiety, and persistent muscle spasms. There is a wealth of scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of medical marijuana treatment. It is a viable alternative to conventional interventions that can be ineffective or carry significant adverse side effects.

This article covers each step to applying for a Nevada medical marijuana card. The quickest way to secure your card is by understanding the requirements, filling out a strong state application, and using the state of Nevada’s online portal.

Step 1: Identify Your Qualifying Condition

Nevada only issues medical cannabis cards to patients with qualifying medical conditions. Consulting a licensed physician to confirm your eligibility is the best way to determine if cannabis is appropriate for your case.

Qualifying conditions for prospective medical marijuana patients in Nevada include:

  • AIDS/HIV
  • Anorexia nervosa
  • Anxiety disorder
  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Cachexia or wasting syndrome
  • Cancer
  • Severe or chronic pain
  • Glaucoma
  • Muscle spasms, including but not limited to those caused by multiple sclerosis
  • Neuropathic conditions with or without seizures
  • Opioid dependence or addiction
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Seizures, including but not limited to those caused by epilepsy

Step 2: Meet with A Licensed Physician

Nevada requires patients to meet with a licensed physician who will issue an Attending Healthcare Provider Statement. The form certifies that you qualify for medical marijuana treatment and lists the dosage and forms of cannabis you may purchase.

Doctors are not required to issue medical marijuana certificates because cannabis is not yet an FDA-approved intervention. As such, your physician may not recommend medical marijuana for you.

The Sanctuary can connect you with an experienced medical marijuana doctor in Nevada. Your consultation will resemble a conventional appointment. The provider will examine your medical records and ask about the type and severity of your symptoms.

Being honest and thorough about the nature of your condition and its impact on your life will help the doctor accurately assess how cannabis can help improve your general wellness, if at all.

Step 3: Compile the Necessary Paperwork and Register With MMMP

A complete submission requires a signed Attending Healthcare Provider Statement, completion of the demographic section of the application, and a copy of the front and back of your Nevada driver's license or identification card. All forms must be clear and complete.

You can create an online account and print the application forms. You can also mail a paper application and the supporting documents to the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health.

Be sure to confirm the forms are signed and dated. The Provider Statement must be notarized when you sign it. Many doctors have on-site public notaries for patient convenience.

A valid Nevada license or identification card will confirm that you’re a resident of Nevada. Your driver or state ID number is your username for the online registration portal.

Step 4: Submit Your Application

You can upload your application through your registry account, scan and email the documents to mmregistry@health.nv.gov, or mail completed applications to the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health, ATTN: Medical Marijuana Division, 4126 Technology Way, Suite 100, Carson City, Nevada 89706.

An online account ensures the quickest approval. You can scan copies of your paperwork or take pictures using the camera on your phone. The images must be legible. Be sure to retain the original copies of your paperwork. You may need to rescan and resubmit if the uploads are unclear.

The state won't process your application for an MMJ card until it receives your application fee. You can pay through the online system using a debit or credit card. Registration is $50 for one year or $100 for two years. Your doctor stipulates your registration term.

Note that if you’re under 18 years of age, you must designate a primary caregiver who’s at least 21 years of age.

Step 5: Receive Your Medical Marijuana Card

Upon approval, a temporary medical marijuana registration ID card will be available in your online portal. You can print and use it at any state-licensed dispensary in Nevada, where you’ll be able to purchase a variety of adult-use cannabis products like edibles, concentrates, and more. While any adult can consume recreational cannabis in Nevada, medical users have access to more products than recreational users.

That document will be valid for 60 days. Permanent cards are mailed within seven to ten business days of your acceptance in the Nevada medical marijuana program.

Registry enrollment exempts medical marijuana cardholders from Nevada’s recreational marijuana tax and entitles them to cultivate up to 12 mature plants. According to Nevada marijuana laws, cardholders can also possess up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis.
