5 Conditions That Qualify for A Maryland Cannabis Card

For centuries, humans have used cannabis as medicine to treat certain conditions. With its pain-relieving and nausea-reducing qualities, medical marijuana can be an effective addition to many treatment regimens.

However, not all medical conditions are eligible for medical marijuana use. If you live in Maryland, you must have one of the pre-approved qualifying conditions identified by the state in order to apply for a cannabis card.

Here are five common qualifying conditions approved by the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission (MMCC).

#1: Anorexia

Anorexia is a severe eating disorder characterized by self-starvation and excessive weight loss. Left untreated, anorexia can lead to serious health consequences, such as anemia, dehydration, and heart disease.

An integral treatment for this condition is weight restoration, but many anorexia patients have difficulty engaging in normal eating patterns and enjoying food.

Medical marijuana may help anorexia patients eat on a regular basis. Cannabis is an appetite stimulant, and research shows that THC activates receptors in our brains that elevates our pleasures when we eat.

#2: Severe or Persistent Muscle Spasms

While minor foot cramps and charley horses are common, medical conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) can lead to severe, painful, and persistent muscle spasms.

These spasms can be difficult to live with, and research shows that medical marijuana is an effective treatment for this condition. Marijuana helps reduce the inflammation that causes severe and persistent muscle spasms, helping reduce their frequency and severity.

#3: Severe or Chronic Pain

Severe and chronic pain can occur due to a number of medical conditions and treatment programs, such as cancer, spinal cord injuries, and AIDS.

Cannabis can help relieve this severe pain, as well as reduce the presence of nausea that often accompanies chronic pain. In addition, medical marijuana is a safer alternative to many opioids prescribed for pain relief, which are contributing to a widespread overdose epidemic across the country.

#4: Epileptic Seizures

Epileptic seizures are sudden, electric nerve disturbances in the brain that can lead to uncontrollable movements, loss of consciousness, and confusion. These disturbances can be very dangerous and impact the quality of life for the patients who suffer from them, especially if they occur on a frequent basis.

While the research is limited, studies suggest cannabidiol or CBD products may help control seizures. In 2018, the Food and Drug Administration approved Epidiolex, the first CBD-based drug to treat rare forms of epilepsy.

#5: Cachexia

Cachexia, also known as wasting syndrome, is a common condition in cancer patients and late-stage heart disease, kidney failure, and AIDS. Cachexia causes extreme weight loss and muscle wasting, and often results in death.

Studies show that medical marijuana can stimulate the appetite of patients suffering from cachexia, allowing them to gain weight and prevent this condition from progressing.
