Semaglutide belongs to a class of medications known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists. The medication mimics the effects of the GLP-1 hormone, thereby reducing appetite and slowing digestion.
Semaglutide, which is used in Wegovy* and Ozempic*, is FDA-approved. It underwent rigorous clinical trials to ensure its safety and efficacy. Newer medications lack the proven track record of semaglutide, and providers have less experience using them to help patients lose weight.
Semaglutide is suitable for long-term use by patients who want to lose excess weight. Maintaining a healthy weight can significantly improve your overall health and well-being while also lowering your risk of chronic conditions such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Compounded semaglutide is a patient-specific medication created in a state Board of Pharmacy or FDA-licensed compounding facility in response to a prescription from a licensed healthcare professional. Compounded drugs must be made with ingredients sourced from FDA-approved facilities and tested for potency, sterility, and purity.
While compounded drugs are legal, they do not require FDA pre-market approval because they are not produced in large quantities for general use. Rather, they are created in response to specific requests from healthcare providers. As a result, their dosages and routes of administration may differ from those of commercial brand-name medications.
Semaglutide stimulates the part of the brain that controls appetite and cravings. This action can reduce your meal frequency and portion size.
The medication helps patients lower their caloric intake by slowing digestion and delaying gastric emptying. When food passes through your stomach more slowly, you feel fuller for longer and have less of an appetite.
Semaglutide is self-administered as a weekly subcutaneous injection.
Medical weight loss is a comprehensive, physician-directed approach to helping people attain and sustain a healthy weight. It entails a personalized plan that can include dietary changes, an exercise regimen, behavioral modifications, and, if necessary, prescription medications such as semaglutide. This approach not only helps patients lose weight but also provides them with the knowledge and tools they need to avoid gaining weight again in the future.
TThe cost of semaglutide injections can vary based on a number of factors, including the dosage prescribed, your location, and whether your health insurance covers the medication. You can expect to pay between $800 and $1,000 per month without insurance.
However, many health insurance companies and Medicare plans cover semaglutide injections, at least in part, which could potentially lower your out-of-pocket costs. Novo Nordisk also provides a patient assistance program for financially disadvantaged patients.
At our weight loss clinic in Sarasota, Florida, we provide semaglutide injections to those looking to lose weight. Our patients have the option of coming in to pick up their medication or having it delivered so they can self-administer semaglutide.
You can complete the entire process of getting a semaglutide prescription online through the Sanctuary. Our patients can schedule and attend appointments with licensed medical weight loss doctors online, and their medication will subsequently be delivered to them. You won't have to leave the comfort of your own home to participate in our program.
The time it takes to lose weight on semaglutide varies significantly between individuals. However, clinical studies indicate that noticeable weight loss usually occurs within the first few weeks of starting the medication. It’s critical to understand that semaglutide is not a cure-all. Rather, it should be used in conjunction with a healthy diet and regular exercise.
Semaglutide injections have been shown to promote significant weight loss. According to relevant studies, patients generally lose 10% to 15% of their body weight over a six-month treatment period. However, the exact amount varies by individual and is influenced by factors such as initial body weight, diet, physical activity, and treatment duration. Patients with a higher initial body weight tend to lose more pounds but a lower percentage of their total weight.
To get the most out of your semaglutide weight loss, you must eat a well-balanced diet rich in lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables, and get plenty of exercise.
Your consultation will be similar to a typical in-person office visit. The doctor will review your medical history and inquire about your weight-loss goals. Speaking openly and honestly will provide them with the information they need to accurately assess your eligibility, rule out potential contradictions, and establish realistic objectives.
Doctors who supervise medical weight loss programs are compassionate professionals who understand the complexities of obesity and how to treat it.
The rate at which weight loss occurs as a result of semaglutide injections varies from person to person and is determined by both the person's response to the medication and their lifestyle. Some people may notice weight loss within the first few weeks of injecting semaglutide, but the majority of patients do not see results until several months into their treatment.
Working with a doctor will allow you to lose weight at a consistent, healthy rate because they will be able to adjust your dose as needed throughout your treatment.
Many people who struggle with excess weight have found success with medical weight loss programs because they provide a comprehensive, scientific approach to weight loss that extends beyond diet and exercise plans.
The use of FDA-approved medications such as semaglutide allow for safe and consistent weight loss, and these programs include medical supervision and behavior modification strategies to help patients achieve their weight loss goals.
Semaglutide injections, like any other medication, can cause side effects. The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. These symptoms typically dissipate over time as your body adjusts to the medication. It is critical to consult a healthcare professional before beginning semaglutide and to report any severe or prolonged side effects while on the medication.
