How to Renew Your PA Medical Marijuana Card

Renewing your medical marijuana card in Pennsylvania is simple. It only requires obtaining an updated certificate by visiting your doctor and paying the renewal fee. Once enrolled in the state’s registry, you can remain a patient as long as you choose to.

Your certification must be renewed every 12 months to purchase cannabis at a dispensary in PA. This interval protects patient safety by requiring a reassessment to ensure medical marijuana remains safe and effective in each individual case.

The process for renewing your medical marijuana card in PA is as follows:

  • You will receive an email reminder about renewing your card 60 days before your certificate expires. Next, book an online appointment with any of the Sanctuary’s registered medical marijuana doctors.
  • Your recertification visit will resemble the initial consultation. Your doctor will ask about your symptoms and your response to medical marijuana treatment. If you are still eligible for the program, your doctor will submit your recertification to the registry.
  • The Department of Health will also send an email reminder 30 days before your renewal payment is due. Log in to your account and ensure a valid form of payment is on file and that your address is current.
  • Once your doctor’s certificate is up-to-date and you pay the $50 renewal fee, the state will automatically mail you a new card.

How to Become a Medical Marijuana Caregiver in PA

Medical Marijuana Caregivers in Pennsylvania are individuals who register with the state’s medical marijuana program to purchase medical marijuana on behalf of minors, homebound adults, and those who require assistance due to a disability. Only individuals over 21 years old with a valid Pennsylvania driver's license or state-issued ID can become registered caregivers.

  1. Register with the Department of Health as a caregiver. You will need to provide the name of the patient you’ll be assisting, their program ID number, and your name and address to set up your account.
  2. Complete a criminal background check through the state's vendor. Individuals convicted of a criminal offense within the past five years for selling or possessing drugs or controlled substances cannot become caregivers. Background checks take up to six weeks to process after your fingerprinting appointment.
  3. The state will contact you by email once you pass the background check. You can then pay the $50 registration fee. Caregiver medical marijuana cards have annual expiration dates.
  4. Schedule an online appointment with one of our doctors.

You can only enter dispensaries and purchase marijuana as a caregiver if your account is associated with a registered patient. If you serve as the caregiver to an adult, they can link you as their caregiver through their online account to authorize you to purchase cannabis products on their behalf. Minors or adults with disabilities must register with you as their caregiver to become patients.

Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Card Conditions

The Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Program is overseen by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Any adult who is a Pennsylvania resident and has a qualifying condition may be eligible for the program. However, they will need to receive a patient certification before visiting a dispensary.

With a medical marijuana ID card, you can purchase up to a 30-day supply of multiple types of cannabis products—topical, edible, and smokable. Recreational cannabis remains illegal in Pennsylvania, and it is also illegal to cultivate marijuana unless the DOH provides explicit authorization.
