How to Get a Medical Marijuana Card in Pennsylvania

step 1

Register for the Medical Marijuana Program at medicalmarijuana.pa.gov

Your driver's license ID number must be used to register with the state. When you make an appointment, the doctor will upload your ID number from the system, updating your records to reflect that you have been approved for medical marijuana treatment.

step 2

Meet with a Certified Doctor from the Sanctuary

Next, you will need to receive certification for a medical marijuana card from a doctor who has been certified with the PA Department of Health. For your convenience, you can schedule a telehealth appointment with one of The Sanctuary’s medical marijuana doctors. Your meeting will be brief, in which you will spend 10 to 15 minutes discussing your health concerns and any questions you might have regarding the use of medical marijuana. If your doctor decides that you qualify, they will give your certification that same day.

step 3

Complete Registration on PA DOH Website

You must sign into the account you used to register and pay the fee to the PA Department of Health after a doctor has certified you. Your card will be mailed by the DOH to the address on your driver's license that you provided when you first registered.

How do I Renew My Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Card?

girl blue

It's easy to renew your medical marijuana card in Pennsylvania. All that is needed is an updated certificate and the renewal fee. You can continue to be a patient for as long as you like after getting placed on the state's registry.

To buy marijuana at a dispensary in Pennsylvania, your certification must be updated every 12 months. A doctor's reevaluation is necessary to make sure medicinal marijuana is still appropriate and safe in each specific circumstance.

An email will be sent to you 60 days before your certificate expires reminding you to renew it. Then, you can make an online appointment with any of the licensed medical marijuana doctors at the Sanctuary. It will be similar to your original MMJ card consultation.

Thirty days prior to the payment deadline for your renewal, the Department of Health will also send you an email reminder. After that, you can log into your account to confirm that a legitimate payment method is stored there. Your card won't expire if you pay the $50 renewal charge within 30 days of receiving this message.

Your doctor will inquire about your symptoms as well as how you feel during and after using medical marijuana. Based on your experiences, you can ask about things like dosages and side effects. Your certification will be sent to the registry by the doctor. It will instantly connect to your account.

Make sure the address that is listed for you online is correct. In the event that your doctor's certificate is current and your payment is accepted, the state will automatically mail you a replacement card.

How to Become a Medical Marijuana Caregiver in PA

In Pennsylvania, caregivers who register with the state's medical marijuana program can buy medical marijuana on behalf of children, adults who are housebound, and people who need help because of a serious medical condition. Registered caregivers must be above 21 and possess a current driver's license or other Pennsylvania state-issued identification card.

  1. As a caregiver, you must register with the Department of Health. To create your account, you have to supply your name and address, the name of the patient you will be helping, their program ID number, and their name.
  2. Submit to a criminal background check via the state's provider. People who have been found guilty of a crime involving the sale or possession of drugs or other prohibited substances during the last five years are ineligible to work as caregivers. After your appointment for fingerprinting, it can take up to six weeks to process your background check.

  1. Once you pass the background check, the state will email you to let you know. The $50 registration fee can then be paid. Medical marijuana cards for caregivers have yearly expiration dates.
  2. Make an online appointment with one of the Sanctuary’s licensed physicians.

As a caregiver, you are only permitted to visit dispensaries and buy marijuana if your account is linked to a valid patient's. If you look after an adult, they can link you to their online account as their caregiver and give you permission to buy cannabis goods on their behalf. In order to become patients, minors or persons with impairments must register with you as their caregiver.

Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Card Conditions

The Medical Marijuana Act was approved by the Pennsylvania General Assembly on April 17, 2016. This made the use, possession, and sale of medical marijuana legal. Each customer must be a resident of Pennsylvania in order to purchase medical marijuana from dispensaries. To become certified to prescribe medical cannabis, a doctor must be PDH-approved and must confirm each patients' qualifying condition(s).

Call (484) 999-0612 to arrange your evaluation and ask any questions you may have.

In order to be eligible to receive an official Pennsylvania medical marijuana card, you must be diagnosed with one of the following qualifying conditions:

Frequently Asked Questions

Only Pennsylvania residents who’re at least 18 years old and have a qualifying condition can obtain a PA medical cannabis card. Minors must appoint a designated caregiver as part of their applications to the state. A criminal record won’t prohibit applicants from obtaining an MMJ card, but it may prevent certain applicants from becoming caregivers.

New and renewal cards are $50 each, to be paid to the state. You may qualify for a free card if you participate in Medicaid, PACE or PACENET, CHIP, SNAP, or WIC. Your doctor will charge a separate fee for the medical marijuana consultation.

The primary rules are that you can only possess marijuana purchased from licensed dispensaries in approved forms. Also, you can only consume medical marijuana in your home or another private place. Finally, employers can permit cardholders to use medical marijuana on-site but are not required to.

Cardholders are bound by the state's other marijuana laws, including intoxicated driving, public consumption, and possession of marijuana obtained outside the limits of their cardholder rights.

Patient status does not exempt you from federal cannabis laws either. It remains illegal to transport cannabis across state lines.

Pennsylvania dispensaries are cash-only businesses. Banking regulations and the federal prohibition on cannabis limit dispensaries' ability to accept credit and debit cards. It's always best to call ahead to confirm the policies at the dispensary you plan to visit. Many locations have on-site ATMs.

If you get a PA medical marijuana card, you won’t be able to legally purchase or possess a firearm, you’ll be subject to marijuana-related DUI laws, you’ll have to pay a $50 fee to the state to renew your MMJ card each year, and your employer and/or landlord may have the right to legally forbid you from consuming cannabis products on their premises.

The pharmacist at your local dispensary sets your 90-day supply of cannabis. They determine the amount based on your symptoms and consumption method. As part of your initial dispensary visit, you will meet with a pharmacist to discuss your medical condition, how your symptoms affect your well-being, and your goals for your medical marijuana treatment.

Being honest and forthcoming about how your conditions impact your quality of life and ability to function will help the pharmacist make the appropriate recommendation.

You can usually make an appointment with one of the Sanctuary's doctors within the week. Your consultation will last about 15 minutes, after which the doctor will submit your certification to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Once you register with the department online and pay the registration fee, your card will be mailed to you. It generally arrives within one to two weeks.

To enter a Pennsylvania dispensary, you must have a valid medical marijuana card and photo ID. Once you finish the registration process, it should take about one to two weeks for your MMJ card to arrive in the mail.

A Pennsylvania MMJ card allows you to buy up to a 90-day/three-month supply of medical marijuana products (as prescribed by your doctor or pharmacist).

Pennsylvania does not have a reciprocity agreement with any other state, so your medical marijuana card is not valid outside of PA. If you intend to spend considerable time in another state, look into its marijuana laws. You could be eligible for a temporary medical marijuana license there.

No, Pennsylvania is one of 13 states in the U.S. where marijuana is only legal for medical purposes. To legally purchase and use cannabis products in PA, you must obtain a medical marijuana doctor's certification based on a qualifying condition.

To keep your medical marijuana card active, you must renew it every 12 months. You can accomplish this by scheduling a recertification appointment with one of the Sanctuary's medical marijuana doctors within 60 days of your card's expiration date. These visits are quick and simple and can be completed online. Once your doctor approves your recertification and you pay the state's $50 fee, you'll receive your new medical cannabis card in the mail.
